History of GMOs

GMOs emerged in 1996 and chronic health issues suddenly increased from seven up to 13 percent within nine years. Likewise, food allergies surged and maladies such as autism, digestive conditions, and reproductive disorders also went up. However, scientists must still confirm that GMOs indeed contribute to these illnesses.

Both the American Public Health Association as well as American Nurses Association expressed disapproval for using GM bovine (cattle genus) growth hormone. It was reported that milk coming from treated cows has more Insulin-like hormones that have been linked to cancer diseases.

GMOs undergo cross pollination and move around. GMO contamination spreads and can outlive effects of nuclear wastes and global warming. The adverse consequence is significant and threatens the wellbeing of forthcoming generations. GMOs can also generate economic losses for farmers who want to take care of their produce.

GMOs also increase the use of herbicides. Genetically modified crops are tolerant to chemical substances. Farmers harm the environment by spraying these pesticides. These so-called contaminated herbicides are also associated with birth defects, disruption of hormones, and sterility.

Genetic Modification

Genetic engineering or manipulation (combining genes of unconnected species) has hazardous side effects regardless of the inserted genes. The creation of genetically engineered plants produces unintentional damage resulting in toxins, carcinogens, and allergens as well as nutritional imperfections.

It is quite unfortunate that bureaucratic oversight is precariously very lenient. The government implements shallow rules and regulations together with lax safety assessments regarding health and environmental dangers of GMOs. For example, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) did not require any safety study or compel the labeling of GMO merchandise. The agency even permits companies to sell GMO items without informing the FDA claiming there is no information that manifests GM commodities are significantly distinct.

Non-GMO Certified

Products with non-GMO project certification means these were made without genetically modified ingredients. National Organic Standards of the United States Department of Agriculture have banned GMOs. Products that are confirmed as non-GMO have non-GMO verified seals. The processing takes three up to six months depending on how fast manufacturers submit their documents for assessment.

The NON GMO Project website  states that the non-profit organization will send the company art files for the Non-GMO seal after it passes the verification procedures and signs the licensing accord. It only covers commodities in the USA and Canada.

GMOs certainly harm our eco-systems, reduce biodiversity, make water resources dirty, and remain unsustainable. In this case, there should be more efforts by the government, concerned industries, and other stakeholders to strengthen the campaign against GMOs.
